Citizenship & Naturalization

Becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is granted to a foreign citizen or national after they fulfill the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

A person may acquire citizenship at birth — those born in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction, those born in certain U.S. territories, and those born abroad to U.S.-citizen parents. Those who are not citizens at birth may become citizens through naturalization, with the same rights and privileges as native-born citizens.

How to apply for naturalization

The process begins with Form N-400, the Application for Naturalization. Applicants must generally have been lawfully admitted as permanent residents. USCIS then conducts a comprehensive review, and the applicant bears the burden of proving eligibility by a preponderance of the evidence.

  • Security and criminal background checks
  • A review of your complete immigration record
  • One or more in-person interviews, with oral and written testimony
  • Testing for the English and civics requirements
  • Consideration of any disability exception

How we help

We review your eligibility, prepare and file your N-400, and prepare you for the interview and the English and civics testing — so you can approach the process with confidence.
